Statement

Court embroidery, comic-book heroines.

The Heroine series puts two heroines of the comic book and the screen into the embroidery of the Chinese court. Ku draws each figure. Embroiderers trained in the palace flower-and-bird technique work the drawing by hand in silk thread; the engraving and the foil go on last.

Heroine I, caped, with long black hair, stands before a wave after Hokusai inside a border of waves embroidered in red, blue and gold. Heroine II, masked, with golden hair, stands before Mount Fuji on a dark green ground embroidered with clouds. The pair hung together at Art Capital, Paris.

Both heroines are in private collections. New heroines are made to commission, drawn by Ku to the commissioner's brief and worked by the same embroiderers. Each leaves the studio with a certificate of authenticity and a provenance record.
