Commissions

Made to commission.

Bespoke single works, and commissioned series or batch editions for brands, institutions, hotels and collectors(客製化批量訂製). A mineral painting is built from more than twenty layers of hand-mounted paper and pigment, so commissions are scheduled from a waiting list. Prices on application.

  1. 1BriefAn enquiry says what is wanted and where it will hang: a single mineral painting, a series for an interior, a hand-lettered logotype or a sutra. The studio replies with a place on the waiting list and an outline of the timeframe.
  2. 2StudyA study on paper, with the materials and dimensions proposed, goes to the client for approval before any pigment is ground. For a series or a batch edition, one study is approved for the set and settles its palette and scale.
  3. 3ExecutionThe work is made in the Taipei studio. Mineral pigment is ground, bound with heated animal glue and laid on more than twenty layers of hand-mounted washi and xuan paper, each layer dried before the next. Gold leaf, silver leaf, mica or crystal go on last.
  4. 4InstallationThe finished work is crated in Taipei and installed on site. Its certificate of authenticity, the patent documentation and the provenance record travel with it.

Recent commissions include ink panels on wood for the ground floor, lounge and corridors of CityInn Hotel in Taipei, ink-wash panels in bronze frames for the display niches of a Taipei jeweller, a mirrored pavilion of projected mandalas at the Taichung Flora Expo, and fashion partnerships with Kiton, Stefano Ricci and Fabiana Filippi, and logotypes brushed for Taiwanese brands and a Mazu temple. Each is documented under Collaborations.

A series for a hotel or a brand is made as a single body of work from a single approved study and, where the brief calls for it, produced as a batch edition.

經書

Series IV · Buddhist Calligraphy

The Heart Sutra, copied to commission.

Heart Sutra (detail): columns of regular script in ink on golden paper beside line drawings of Guanyin and red seals
Series IV · Buddhist Calligraphy 經書 Heart Sutra 心經 (detail) Ink on golden paper, handscroll, with drawings of Guanyin

She copies the Heart Sutra in gold ink on black paper, or in ink on paper, as handscrolls that read from right to left and close with her seals. The longest runs past nineteen metres, so that the time of recitation becomes the time of looking. Temples commission them, as do families for a dedication or a memorial; Xingang Fengtian Temple, a Mazu temple, commissioned the calligraphy for its centenary blessing. A dedication, a length and a date are agreed on enquiry.
